In conversation with Solomon Islands singer Charles Maimarosia
Celebrated Soloman Islander Charles Maimarosia looks back on his musical inspirations and process ahead of his performance at Melbourne Recital Centre.
Effortlessly weaving elements of folk, world music, and contemporary pop, Maimarosia’s music crafts a distinct sonic landscape that is both accessible and deeply expressive. Captivating audiences with his skilful guitar playing and soulful vocals, Maimarosia’s lyrics explore themes of love, identity, and the beauty of nature. Seamlessly incorporating traditional Solomon Islands sounds and rhythms, he embraces traditional instruments like the pan flutes, bamboo percussion, and guitar, infusing his compositions with a unique cultural flavour.
We spoke with Charles about some of the music that shaped the curation of this special performance ahead of his appearance in the Primrose Potter Salon.

'Beautiful Day' by U2 – this song encourages optimism and finding beauty in everyday life, even when things aren't going perfectly. It's a call to not let the troubles of life diminish the appreciation of living.
'I Will Survive' by Gloria Gaynor – a timeless anthem of resilience and empowerment, this song, performed by the iconic LGBTQIA+ artist Gloria Gaynor, has become synonymous with overcoming adversity and standing strong in the face of challenges.
